Tunnels and Plugs

Tunnels and Plugs Shopping Guide

Tunnels and plugs are always popular, and a huge part of the piercing industry. With so many designs and styles available, these piercings allow for endless new wonderful looks.

There are five main types of tunnels and plugs. Below you can find more information about these different types, as well as guidance on how to measure tunnels and plugs, to help you decide what tunnel or plug type might be best for you.

Tunnel and Plug Sizes

Measuring tunnels and plugs is quite straightforward. However, to accurately measure the size, you need a caliper tool. A ruler or measuring tape can help, but is not the best way to measure the size.

Choosing the correct size for your new tunnel or plug is much like the bar thickness of other piercings. Some tunnels and plugs require a fully healed ear and some skin flexibility to be put in safely.

Different Types of Tunnels and Plugs

With five different main types of tunnels and plugs, there is definitely something for everyone. Each type has its own pros and cons.

Single-flared and no-flared plugs or tunnels are a bit less common. The lack of flares on one or both sides is especially great for when you are stretching to a new size. Screw-fit tunnels and plugs are absolute bestsellers. They don't require much flexibility from the skin, making them much easier to put in. Because of the threading at the end, they are not the best choice for freshly stretched earlobes, but are a great choice for healed ears.

Double-flared tunnels and plugs are considered to be the standard type of tunnel or plug. With flares on each end, they require your earlobes to be fully healed and flexible enough to put them in. These tunnels and plugs will stay in place nicely, thanks to the flares.

The saddle-fit tunnels and plugs have "flares" that are more curved and shaped like a saddle. They are comfortable to wear but have a slightly higher risk of falling out than the other types. Because the edges are thicker than the middle, they require healed and flexible ears.

Tunnel and Plug Materials

The materials available for tunnels and plugs are different from other piercing types. Materials such as wood and natural stones are beautiful and popular. Below is more information about the most used materials.

Natural

Tunnels and Plugs made from natural materials are a great alternative to the more common materials. There are different materials, such as glass or stone, each with other pros and cons. Discover them in the material guide.

Tunnels and Plugs Aftercare

Aftercare for tunnels and plugs is a bit different from other piercings. Bacteria will nest in the area between the earlobe and the piercing, which often leads to a smelly earlobe. Wash your ears regularly and use a bit of our Piercing Balm to keep your earlobes fresh.

It's also recommended to use Jojoba Oil. It softens the skin and prevents both your skin as well as tunnels and plugs made of wood from drying out.
